Sunday Sketches - Watercolor Faces

>> Saturday, April 13, 2013

Watercolor Sketch
Playing with watercolors and decided to try some faces.  I've never done portraits in watercolor and I had fun playing with these two sketches.  I know there are plenty of things wrong with them, I wasn't going for accuracy as much as just playing with some colors and shading.
Watercolor Sketch
There are things I love about both and things that are really off, like the mouth in this second sketch.  It's almost a Picasso! lol.  Linking up with Sunday Sketches.  Hope you are having a good weekend!

Sunday Sketches - Poppies

'Poppies' Watercolor on Canson 140lb cold press paper
First off, sorry for the bad photo, I finished this in the evening and could not get good light to save my life.  The background is actually white but it keeps showing up pinkish or yellowish in the pics even with playing with it in Photoshop.  I love red and have red accents in my kitchen so I thought poppies would make a perfect painting to add some color pop to the walls.  I did a bunch of practice poppies in my field sketch book and three poppy paintings before I got to this one.  I love how the poppies turned out but I'm not real happy with the placement of the two top buds.  Sooo...I'm sure there will be more poppy painting madness in my near future.

I also did some hummingbird watercolor studies which my mom has hinted she would love for mother's day.

I just turned my spare bedroom into a studio of sorts and am loving the fact that all of my supplies are in one spot...and I have space to store everything!  It's amazing how just having easy access to your supplies can really get the creative juices flowing. I did a free form daisy painting in oils also, all in the last two days! The house is spotless, laundry is done and I had the whole day today to myself so I've been busy painting away in between watching reruns of The Walking Dead, (even though I have an irrational fear of zombies, I love that show!)

Hope you had a great creative weekend!  I'm linking up to Sunday Sketches so please stop by to visit the other lovely creations.

Sunday Sketches - Christmas Cards

Watercolor on Strathmore heavyweight textured cards
I absolutely love Christmas, everything about it from the crazy running around buying gifts, to the days of cooking and baking.  This year I decided to make a few Christmas cards instead of just sending the commercial bought ones. I love giving personal gifts and what better way to say Merry Christmas than with a hand painted card.  They're not perfect and I need to practice more with my writing skills but I'm happy with these so far.  I'm linking up with Sunday Sketches so hop on over and check out the other great artists by clicking here.

Sunday Sketches - Daisy

'Daisy'
I'm back!!! It has been a very long few weeks but we are finally moved in and believe it or not, everything is unpacked!  We found some very good families for the dogs.  We couldn't keep them together but they did get taken in by two wonderful families and both have kept in touch to let us know how they're doing.

We moved in a week ago Friday and I have been busy unpacking as my mother flew in from Arizona on Thursday and will be here until the 19th.  This is the first day I've had a little free time to do some artwork so I decided to go with something quick and easy and did another addition to my flower series.  I went with a simple daisy and think it turned out pretty good seeing as I worked all day and get distracted by my mother every now and then.

Hope you all had a wonderful Mother's Day and I hope to be back more often although it won't be easy until my mother leaves.  Not as much free time.  Hop on over to Blue Chair Diary to see more Sunday Sketches.

Sunday Sketches - Practice Pieces

>> Sunday, April 17, 2011

Happy Sunday!  I've spent most of the weekend doing practice trees so I decided to try to do a quick landscape.  Nothing spectacular just trying to apply some of the things I learned from watching videos on YouTube last night.

Not to be upstaged by a silly little practice piece Peanut just had to get in on the action and have her photo take also.

We're going to look at another apartment this afternoon.  Much cheaper than the last one, hopefully just as nice.  Need to decide soon as we only have a couple weeks before moving day.  It sure would be nice to have somewhere to move to. lol

Sunday Sketches - Midnight Velvet

>> Sunday, April 10, 2011

'Midnight Velvet'
I've been practicing with my watercolors and was looking at photos online for some inspiration and found this gorgeous glowing moon with black background and treeline and couldn't resist.  Now, my treeline isn't as nearly as cool as the real thing and I kinda cut off the moon a little too much on the right but I think it turned out really good.  The colors in real life really pop and it looks as if it's glowing so I'm super psyched about this one and can't wait to frame it and hang it!

I use watercolors for the moon and gouache for the black to make sure it was more opaque and not too transparent.  I've had some small tubes of the gouache for about three years and haven't touched them until now.  It's much thicker than regular watercolor so I only had to give it two coats to get a nice rich black.

The hunt for a new apartment is still on.  We're supposed to look at a condo for rent today but I haven't heard back from the owner so I'm not sure if he found someone else to rent it or he's just been really busy.  I'm hoping it's because he's busy because it sounds really nice.  It has two bedrooms and a loft area, 1.5 bathrooms, a washer and dryer right in the unit and central air!  Knowing my luck he already rented it out and is just avoiding me now. lol.

Anyway, to see more great Sunday Sketches hop on over to Blue Chair Diary hosted by the lovely Sophia!

Sunday Sketches

This has been an incredibly busy week.  I have not had time for any artwork until yesterday afternoon.  This was the first week of being on days which is always rough in the beginning.  By the time you get used to getting up early, you go back to afternoons.  We've also been searching for a new apartment.  It's one of those situations where we really can't afford to stay where we are but really can't afford to move right now either.  I've been feeling pretty much like the girl in my sketch.  It seems as though it is getting harder rather than easier as more time goes by since Jeff's passing.  I think once the stress of knowing where we will end up living is over, things will get better.  Thank you to all of my blogging friends for all of your kind words.  I'm usually a very easy going person and I hate dumping all of this on my unsuspecting readers but sometimes it helps to get things out.

Good morning!  Happy Sunday to you all!  Here's my submission for Sunday Sketches this week.  I drew this at work the other day so I still haven't gotten to use my new pencils. Hopefully I'll get to try them out tonight.  I'm very curious to see if there is a big difference between those and the ones I have used for the past two years.  To see more wonderful Sunday Sketches hop on over to Sophia's blog here.

I don't have much of a sketch this week as I have not been feeling too good the last two days.  I'm also still trying to cope with losing my boyfriend as today is exactly one month since he passed.  I did try to color her with my watercolor pencils but it was not a good thing.  The paper I used was too thin and buckled so I started over and decided to just leave her alone for now.  I'm thinking of bringing her into Illustrator and playing with adding some color but that will have to wait for another day.

Hope you all are having a good weekend.  Be sure to check out all of the lovely Sunday Sketches hosted by Sophia of Blue Chair Diary.

It's so nice to be sketching again and I'm so excited to be contributing to Sunday Sketches again!  I love sketching birds.  They're pretty easy to do and they're just so darned cute.  I sketched this little one from an image I found on the web.  I'm trying to work outside of the sketch books I have as it's easy to draw something that has step by step photos of how to add the shading and everything.  I think it turned out pretty good.  Much better than the last few things I tried sketching.  I guess it's partly because I really love the subject and I'm not just doing it because it's one of the exercises in my books.

I found a really good watercolor book at the library so hopefully next Sunday I'll have something in color for you all!

Sunday Sketches - Through the Trees

>> Sunday, July 18, 2010

So I've finally made a landscaping picture that I absolutely love.  Not sure if you can see it so much in the scan (well, photo that I brought into photoshop and edited) but the background is supposed to be trees off in the distance.  Don't care so much about them as I do the tree in the forefront.

I am one of those that hates drawing trees.  I think my limbs always look bad and leaves, forget about it!  I would do many more buildings and landscape sketches if it weren't for having to draw the trees and bushes.  lol.  Somehow this one worked out very well and I am thrilled with it!  Please also keep in mind that I worked on this at work in between all of the phone calls today.  We were understaffed and somewhat busy, but I am grateful that there were no major catastrophes this weekend and I only received one call.  A new girl didn't know she was on the schedule yesterday and I had to call her in.  No biggie.  :)

Baby bird seems to be doing a little better today.  I had to splint her leg again, the first one fell off so I waited until my wonderful boyfriend was in bed so he didn't freak out ( I handle ers much better than he does, remind me to tell you about the day I cut off part of my fingertip with a rotary cutter.)  I think she may have been in shock yesterday as she was very listless.  Today she is back to her feisty self and biting us when we try to hold her.  Have no fear, it's not because she is in pain, she always bites us when we try to hold her, except for yesterday.  She still can't use her foot and she may never be able to but the fact that she's eating, preening, interacting with the other birds and moving around a little bit makes me think she's going to be ok in the long run.  She's a very strong and brave little bird.

Pencil on Sketch Paper

I've been trying to practice my portraits because I feel that this category is my strongest skill set.  I tried doing a small landscape sketch of rocks and some plants, horrible.  lol.  I will be trying some famous faces soon so that you'll be able to see the comparison and see how I'm doing.  It's easy to draw a portrait, but it's extremely hard to get it to look like the actual person you are drawing.

My back is a little better.  I ended up going to the er and got some pain meds to take along with the motrin and muscle relaxers.  I only take the muscle relaxers at night though.  Makes me very sleepy.  :)  I'm off to work but will be back later this evening to check out all of the wonderful Sunday Sketches.  In the mean time hop on over to Sophia's blog to see more great sketches by some very talented artists.

Pencil on Sketch Paper

Close Up
Here's my Sunday Sketches for this week.  It's just another practice piece, I don't actually own a bird like this.  lol.  If we ever get good close up shots of our parakeets I will definitely draw them, but for now, they are terrified of the camera.  Silly birds.

If you haven't checked out Sunday Sketches hosted by Sophia from Blue Chair Diary, please do so today.  She is very talented and wonderful enough to host Sunday Sketches each week without fail.  Be sure to visit the other artists on the linky list!

I've been MIA for a few days because my back has been killing me.  You really know you're getting old when you throw your back out by bending over to put pop in the fridge.  lol  Not really, I was diagnosed with Degenerative Disk Disease in my lower back about 10 years ago.  I haven't had another MRI since then so I'm assuming like everything else, it's only gotten worse over time.  I did see the doctor yesterday and she gave me some muscle relaxers, which thoroughly knocked me out last night.  I also have ibuprophen for use in the day time.  I'm feeling a little better now and hope to be back to daily posts!  Thanks for dropping by and I hope you have a wonderful holiday!

Sunday Sketches - Puppy Love

>> Sunday, June 27, 2010

I think he turned out pretty cute!  This was my second attempt at drawing a dog.  The first had longer hair and was a little harder to draw.  This was another project in the book I'm trying to learn from.  I don't have any puppies right now; however, I did have a black lab mix several years ago that looked very similar to this one.

Don't forget to hop on over to Blue Chair Diary to check out all of the other great Sunday Sketches!  There are some really great artists out there.
