Seascape Oil on 16x20 Canvas |
So I'm a tad bit obsessed with Bob Ross. I can spend half a day just watching him paint happy little trees and clouds. I know there is a bit of controversy over his painting style, many artists feel that he isn't what is considered a fine arts artist. That; however, is untrue. Bob started as a traditional fine arts oil painter and learned the wet on wet technique from William Alexander who also hosted his own show on PBS. It was a way to teach people that anyone can paint with a little practice. That being said, I've tried a few of his paintings, some with success, some not so much but I love the learning process. His show is still being aired on both PBS and the Create channel in my area so I have tons of reference paintings to choose from. Lots of happy little trees will be flowing off my brushes in the near future!
I also finished my daughter's Ganesha painting. She is absolutely thrilled with it which makes me very happy. She had sent me a reference photo of the one both she and her fiance liked best. I was a little worried about sketching him out on such a large canvas, not to mention that the dimensions of the canvas size she picked was taller and narrower than the original photo but I did it! It's the first time I've sketched an image right onto the canvas and I had to make some adjustments to make him appear longer without distorting his proportions too much.

I haven't heard of Bob Ross before, will have to look him up. Your Ganesha painting is fabulous, I really like the clean lines & shading.
Bob Ross made painting look so effortless, I miss seeing him and occasionally watch his old shows on PBS. I think this seascape would make him proud. xox
Wonderful seaside! I like how the light comes through the water. Happy PPF
Beautiful paintings, and what a great gift for your daughter. Bob Ross has been on tv ever since I can remember, even here (Switzerland), and while his paintings might not be to everyone's taste, I think that his effortless way of painting, and sharing his techniques with others are quite amazing.
Wow I love your pieces today both so different.
I love your seascape. You really nailed the light in the wave. I loved Bob Ross. He was so calming and zen-like on his show. I never tried his techniques, but I loved it that he wanted to show that anyone could be an artist.
The elephant is awesome too!
Your seascape and your Ganesha are both beautiful!
Happy PPF

Your paintings look great. I think you should paint in a style that gives you joy.
I just had to go Google Bob Ross - I didn't know who he was but funny enough I watched an American TV show the other evening where someone did an impersonation of him!! Makes more sense now! I'm not sure why he wouldn't be considered a fine artist - his work is stunning. As is yours - I love your seascape - it makes me long to be somewhere warm and your Ganesha turned out wonderfully.
That wave is great, I live by the sea and I assure you that is beautiful and well achieved, elephant gods reminded me of India. Saludos
I love your beautiful seascape and your Ganesha
Happy PPF!

Your seascape is beautiful! HPPF!
Beautiful, very expressive and dynamic paintings. Thank you very much for sharing.
I totally agree with you Deanne, Bob Ross was a terrific artist. I think we have to remember that the programs were limited on time, and although he could obviously paint a reasonable scene in half an hour or so, it still needed to be screen worthy. After all, he was not only showing people who already Knew how to paint, but was also doing the demos to show New people how They could paint....well that's what I think anyway :) I sometimes combine his technique with my own version for larger oils And in fact for Acrylics too (I use Atelier Interactive Acrylics) which can be blended, and that's an important key to the Bob Ross paintings. Loved seeing both your paintings here :)
I love Bob Ross. I used to take formal painting lessons as a kid, but I loved watching Bob Ross paint. I loved his don't worry, be happy take on art. Great paintings Deanna!

What a lovely painting! I love how you painted the reflection of the sun in the water.
Happy PPF!
When I looked at your gorgeous seascape - it reminded me of a Georgia O'Keefe painting from 1923. It's not one of her florals - it's called Pink Moon and Blue Lines. It may not even be considered one of her best - but I love it. Your seascape, in color and line, just reminds me of it. I have tried to recreate the mood of that painting, but have never been successful. I think you have been without even knowing it. Your elephant is just fantastic as well. What a beautiful gift. HPPF
simply beautiful!
Your seascape is beautiful. I remember some years ago my daughter (she was pretty young at that time) and I accidentally found a Bob Ross show on PBS and we simply cracked up about all his "happy little trees", but at the same time we were fascinated and thought what he showed was so easy. So yes, I can understand that you like him - I do, too.
This is my first time on your blog, and I fell in love with your blog header!
Wow! I love that seascape! And the Ganesha...Both the paintings are beautiful!
